    Q-Andrew: a consolidated QOS management framework

Cada fabricante de equipamento activo de rede usa sistemas de manutenção proprietários, incompatíveis com equipamentos de outros fabricantes. Para um operador de telecomunicações a gestão da Qualidade de Serviço, numa rede composta por vários fabricantes, é uma tarefa complexa e dispendiosa. Algumas tarefas requerem configuração manual para garantir a compatibilidade entre configurações de equipamentos de fabricantes diferentes. Melhorar a resposta operacional e reduzir os custos de operação nestas circunstâncias é apenas possível com a consolidação da gestão de rede. Para responder a este desafio, propomos: Um conjunto de mecanismos geradores de configurações de Qualidade de Serviço, consistentes entre equipamentos de diversos fabricantes; A definição de um modelo abstracto de representação destas configurações, reutilizável em futuras aproximações de gestão consolidada de rede; Por fim, descrevemos uma aplicação de demonstração onde algumas das propostas apresentadas são concretizadas, tendo como objectivo futuro a sua utilização numa rede real de um operador de telecomunicações nacional, onde são utilizados equipamentos de diversos fabricantes.Converged IP networks consist of diverse technologies and support both legacy and emerging services. Different vendors use separate management systems to achieve similar goals. Manual provisioning today represents a large portion of the total effort required to manage a complex IP network. A consolidated Quality-of-Service policy is difficult to implement in heterogeneous networks. Creating and maintaining such policies is very demanding in terms of operations. For this reason, reducing operational costs while improving Quality-of-Service Management is only possible through a consolidated approach to network management. To leverage operations in converged IP networks, we propose the following: A mechanism to automatically generate consistent configurations across a network with equipment from different vendors; A framework definition such that network element configurations can be specified using a common model; Applying some of the methods proposed to an application that can be used in a real network with diverse technologies and equipment vendors

    Perception of Portuguese Nurses

    Funding: The present study was funded by the Center for Research, Innovation, and Development in Nursing, in Portugal, by means of grants provided to some of the authors.The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes and challenges to health professionals, due to a lack of knowledge when dealing with the disease, fear of contagion, and the sequelae that characterize long COVID. To deal with this situation, respiratory rehabilitation programs are recommended in face-to-face and/or telerehabilitation modalities. (1) Background: This study had as its primary aim identifying the aspects/components to be considered in the planning and implementation of telerehabilitation interventions that guarantee transitional care for people with long COVID-19 after hospitalization and as a secondary aim identifying the positive aspects of telerehabilitation. (2) Methods: The method used to answer the research question was a focus group, carried out online with eight nurses specialized in rehabilitation nursing. The answers to the semi-structured interview were subjected to content analysis, and qualitative data analysis software (WebQDA®) was used to organize and analyze the findings. (3) Results: Four categories emerged from the content analysis: coordination between care levels; transitional care telerehabilitation intervention; advantages of telerehabilitation; and opportunities. (4) Conclusions: These findings make an important contribution to the reorganization of transitional care, allowing the identification of central aspects to be considered in the planning and implementation of telerehabilitation programs for people with long COVID.publishersversionpublishe

    On the Relevance of Soft Tissue Sarcomas Metabolic Landscape Mapping

    Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) prognosis is disappointing, with current treatment strategies being based on a "fit for all" principle and not taking distinct sarcoma subtypes specificities and genetic/metabolic differences into consideration. The paucity of precision therapies in STS reflects the shortage of studies that seek to decipher the sarcomagenesis mechanisms. There is an urge to improve STS diagnosis precision, refine STS classification criteria, and increase the capability of identifying STS prognostic biomarkers. Single-omics and multi-omics studies may play a key role on decodifying sarcomagenesis. Metabolomics provides a singular insight, either as a single-omics approach or as part of a multi-omics strategy, into the metabolic adaptations that support sarcomagenesis. Although STS metabolome is scarcely characterized, untargeted and targeted metabolomics approaches employing different data acquisition methods such as mass spectrometry (MS), MS imaging, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provided important information, warranting further studies. New chromatographic, MS, NMR-based, and flow cytometry-based methods will offer opportunities to therapeutically target metabolic pathways and to monitorize the response to such metabolic targeting therapies.     Exercício físico na pessoa com demência: Revisão Sistemática de Literatura

    Background: Dementia is characterized by a set of disorders that involving a progressive loss of cognitive functions as well as affecting the skill necessary for the normal development of activities of daily living. Objective: Identify the benefits of physical exercise at the cognitive, sensory and motor level in the person with dementia. Method: Systematic Review of literature, started with the question: "What are the benefits of physical exercise in people with dementia?". The research was carried out using the electronic database platforms: EBSCOHost and BVS, having been identified, selected, evaluated in a methodological quality and included articles that take into account the PRISMA recommendations. Results: There were included seven studies meeting the inclusion criteria, that is, primary experimental studies, addressing the practice of physical exercise in people with dementia and Alzheimer Disease, published in the last 5 years (2014-2018), in Portuguese, English and Spanish, were included, with full text of free access. Conclusions: This Systematic Review reveals evidence of the beneficial effects of physical exercise on cognition and motor ability in people with dementia.Introducción: La demencia es caracterizada por un conjunto de trastornos que engloban una pérdida progresiva de las funciones cognitivas y afecta la destreza que es necesaria para el desarrollo normal de las actividades de vida diaria. Objectivo: Identificar los beneficios de ejercicio físico a nivel cognitivo, sensorial y motor en la persona con demencia. Método: Revisión Sistemática de la Literatura con la cuestión de la investigación "¿Cuáles son los beneficios del ejercicio físico en las personas con demencia?". La investigación fue realizada con recurso a plataformas de bases de datos electrónicas EBSCOHost y Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, habiendo sido identificados, seleccionados, evaluados en la calidad metodológica e incluidos artículos de acuerdo con las recomendaciones del PRISMA. Resultados: Se incluyeron siete estudios que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión, es decir, estudios primarios experimentales que aborden el ejercicio físico en personas con demencia, publicado en los últimos cinco años (2014-2018), en portugués, Inglés y Español, con texto integral de libre acceso. Conclusiones: Esta revisión sistemática de la literatura revela evidencia de los efectos del ejercicio sobre cognición, agitación, depresión y capacidad motora en personas con demencia.Introdução: A demência é caraterizada por um conjunto de transtornos que englobam uma perda progressiva das funções cognitivas e afeta a destreza que é necessária ao desenvolvimento normal das atividades de vida diária. Método: revisão sistemática da literatura com a questão de pesquisa “Quais os benefícios do exercício físico em pessoas com demência?”.     Laurus nobilis (laurel) aqueous leaf extract's toxicological and anti-tumor activities in HPV16-transgenic mice

    Cancers induced by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remain a significant public health threat, fueling the study of new therapies. Laurel (Laurus nobilis) compounds and extracts recently showed in vitro activity against HPV-transformed cell lines. This work aims to evaluate the in vivo efficacy and hepatic toxicity of a laurel extract in a transgenic mouse model of HPV16-induced cancer. The extract was administered in drinking water (20 mg per animal per day) for three consecutive weeks, using four experimental groups (n = 10) (group I: HPV16−/− without treatment, group II: treated HPV16−/−, group III: HPV16+/− without treatment and group IV: treated HPV16+/−). Following the treatment period, animals were sacrificed and skin samples were used to classify skin lesions histologically. Toxicological parameters included hematological and biochemical blood markers, splenic and hepatic histology and hepatic oxidative stress. The extract did not prevent the progression of HPV16-induced cutaneous lesions in this model. The treated wildtype animals showed mild hepatitis, while transgenic animals suffered weight loss. However, there were no changes concerning hematological, biochemical and hepatic oxidative stress markers.This work was supported by: Integrative Research in Environment, Agro-Chains and Technology no.     HERA - Environmental Risk Assessment of a contaminated estuarine environment: a case study

    Sado River estuary is located in the west coast of Portugal. Previous environmental studies identified industrial contamination, non-point anthropogenic sources and contamination coming from the river, all promoting accumulation of polluted sediments with known impacts on the ecological system. Surrounding human populations have intense economic fishery activities. Together with agriculture, estuary fishing products are available to local residents. Food usage previously characterized through ethnographic studies suggests exposure to estuarine products, farming products, and water in daily activities, as potential routes of contamination. The Portuguese higher education system comprises both Universities and Polytechnic Institutes, which face an increasing pressure to demonstrate that their presence has an impact on the surrounding communities contributing to their economic development. This paper presents the estimation of the economic impact of twelve Polytechnic Institutes, located in quite diverse regions, based on a shared model so that comparisons have a collective framework of analysis. The main results obtained show that the economic impact ranged from 1.8% to 10.6% of the local GDP and that these Institutes are major local employers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal

    Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide. Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal. Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland), which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal. Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the first cases were confirmed. Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal.
